![]() Wheelchair Stair LiftsYou may think that you need an elevator to move a wheelchair about your home – you do not. You can actually have a wheelchair lift as you can have a sit down lift – on the stairs. If you thought you had to virtually remodel your home in order for a wheelchair to be moved from one level to another then you would be wrong to think that. A wheelchair stair lift can work in just the same way as a chair stair lift, although it naturally needs more room when it is in use. This has to be the best option price wise, it would cost you a lot more to install an elevator in your home, and that might necessitate structural alterations. With the wheelchair stair lifts all you need are stairs – which you already have hence the need to find a way to get a wheelchair up them. You will realize I am sure that a wheelchair stair lift is going to be more expensive than just a sit-on version, and a curved one is going to be quite expensive, but I still think that you would save on this option rather than an elevator. You may, of course, know someone in the building trade who could install an elevator for you for next to nothing [??]. A quiet method is a rack-and-pinion system, this will work nicely for light duty, i.e. not in a public place where it is likely to be used all the time. There is a quieter model, the one using a cable to haul the wheelchair and it actually requires less maintenance than the others. The only slight problem with this one is that the long cable will have a little slack and stopping and starting will not be quite so smooth. I think perhaps this one might be a problem for someone who has pain in their joints, the jerky movement might not give them such a comfortable ride. There are other options but they are not as popular in a private situation because they are either too noisy or too expensive. Wheelchair stair lifts actually run on tracks laid on the stairs. It seems that wheelchair stair lifts in general which are electrically driven from mains power are not as popular as those driven by batteries. For one thing batteries will not leave you stranded [of course they must always be charged]. To avoid a wheelchair user negotiating the stairs via a lift getting a sort of vertigo, looking down, most models will have a feature which allows for the chair to face sideways or even face the top of the stairs, i.e. go down backwards. This takes away that feeling of nervousness that may occur with the user. Wheelchair stair lifts are literally a lifesaver to anyone confined to one who needs to have the use of his/her whole home. You can rise to the next level so safely and without any hassle whatsoever with these stair lifts. |
