![]() Stair Wheelchair LiftsStair wheelchair lifts are obviously not the same sort of thing as a regular stair lift that runs on tracks up the side of the stairs. For anyone who is confined to a wheelchair something different is required, a platform of some sort which will hold the wheelchair and keep it safely in place whilst travelling from one level in the home to another. There are different methods of transferring Wheelchair, one does actually use the stairway but instead of a seat there is a platform surrounded by a guard rail for protection and safety. This is a good system, but some models require to use the whole width of the stairs, they travel up tracks fixed to both sides. Granted this shouldn’t be a problem to other family members wishing to use the stairs, they would simply wait until the wheelchair has finished its journey, or they could opt for going first. This type of lift usually is made to fold up and away when not in use. As with other lifts, stair wheelchair lifts also have the safety facility of recognizing if there is an obstacle on the stairs and will bring the lift to a stop until the obstruction is removed. Another type of wheelchair lift is the platform list for wheelchairs. These are very handy in other ways apart from moving to another level. They are usually portable and therefore they can be used in a kitchen to allow the wheelchair user to reach cupboards that they have never been able to reach before. They could be used elsewhere in the home, perhaps to reach something from a book shelf for instance. Some of the platform style installations are meant to be sited permanently, providing access to an upper level. Obviously there are different models but most of them feature a solid access door and also have surround side panels for absolute maximum safety and protection when in motion. There are also the excellent through-floor lifts. Although these will require some structural alteration because as you will readily realize from the description that this lift goes up and through the upper floor. This type also has an enclosed cubicle type of platform for optimum safety. Once you have descended perhaps in the morning, you can then send the lift back upstairs so that it is out of the way and do the reverse when you go upstairs for the last time at night. Send it downstairs so that it is not taking up space in your bedroom. This is a less expensive option than an elevator, and although there is some structural work to be done it is not as invasive as installing an elevator. Also an elevator is usually more costly than the average person could afford to have installed in their home. Choosing one of the stair wheelchair lifts which are available can vastly improve the Quality of life of a disabled wheelchair user. They would be able to come and go when they choose, rather than always having to wait until the time is suitable for someone to help them. The difference to the feeling of independence would be incalculable. What price autonomy? |
