Handicap Wheelchair Lifts

If you are looking for handicap wheelchair lifts you might have just picked the right time. At this time of year suppliers are taking in the newest models and this could mean that they will be offering discounts on the previous models.

This has to be good news, especially with the general economic climate being as it is.

These handicap lifts are not a luxury item by any means, in some cases they are an absolute necessity to enable a disabled person to just enjoy their life as best they can.

If a person is confined to a wheelchair it may seem that their life has to be put on hold, but there really is no need to think like this. As long as they have wheelchair lifts both inside the home and for their automobile they are free to come and go as suits them.

There are vertical platform lifts which can stand alongside a flight of steps, both inside and out, to take the wheelchair up to the top level, some are permanent features but some are mobile, i.e. they can be moved to another place.

There is every kind of product you can need to help with moving a wheelchair from one location to another via a car/van. Ramps to allow a wheelchair to ride up into the side door of a van for instance. Some of these ramps can be as much as 60″ long to allow for a gentle incline and then can be folded away when not in use.

When handicap wheelchair lifts are installed to make use of the stairs in the home, to be able to have one of these inclined wheelchair stair lifts in the home it needs the stairs to be actually on a load bearing wall. The reason for this is because this type of lift works on a rack and pinion system which has to be wall mounted.

The stair width must be the width of the wheelchair plus a bit extra, and then we come to the landings at the top. There must be enough space for the person to roll their wheelchair forward off the platform and turn themselves around to proceed to their destination.

These qualifications might mean that this type of lift will not be suitable for all homes. The vertical type is very good but requires a different area of space and of course is more expensive.

The through floor lift is quite superior in function but obviously requires some structural alteration being made, mainly to the floor of the upper room where the lift will issue into.

This is not a long process, a couple of days for the supplier to make the necessary alterations, so relatively stress free for the householder.

These vertical handicap wheelchair lifts can either be powered by electricity or hydraulics.  It is quite possible to fit this type of lift just onto a wall perhaps in a commercial property so that disabled people in the workplace have no problem with wheelchair access.

Even if we were not considering adult’s in wheelchairs but young people who are still in school, they would allow for them to get from class to class on whatever level with little or no difficulty.

There are so many alternatives that people in wheelchairs can look forward to a greater freedom of movement than ever before.
