Places like shopping malls, airports, bus or train stations, hospitals, in fact any place where the public congregate.

Building permission would not be given for any structure that didn’t provide this disabled access.

The most usual type of conveyance is the commercial stair lift which is a motorized platform which is able to travel up or down stairs, on the right or left side of the stairs with tracks attached to the walls. Domestic stair lifts have their tracks fixed to the steps themselves, not the walls.

These type of commercial stair lift have control switches situated to allow the passenger to operate the lift by themselves. You would also find buttons situated at the top and bottom of the track to call the lift, pretty much as you would call an elevator when it is stationed at another floor.

This installation is going to have a heavy-duty AC motor and would run on the mains electric supply of the building or area when it is situated. The motor is going to have the ability to lift up to 500 pounds weight up approximately 20 feet of steps reaching a speed of 20 feet per minute.

A stair lift comprising a platform can be used by people other than wheelchair users, how about people who are on crutches, or have to use a walking stick,or perhaps cannot bend their knees to sit on a seat type stair lift? Lots of people with different problems could use this platform type of lift.

Commercial stair lifts work on the exact same principle as a domestic model but they need to be more heavy duty because of the heavier wear and tear that a public facility is going to have to tolerate.

Installing a lift is more economic than fixing up a ramp to run alongside of the actual stairs and it is a lot more flexible in its various uses.

Care is usually taken to make these commercial installations safe from children thinking they are just another play area. It wouldn’t be suitable to have controls at child level so that they could be taking themselves up and down stairs without proper precautions for their safety. Plus while they are ‘playing’ the lift may be required by a bone fide user.

These installations are a huge help to anyone with mobility problems. They provide the means for these people to get around under their own steam and enjoy their freedom.
